Ok, instead of me typing out a bunch of stuff, here's the relevant page from the previews:
So, what I'd like to do is open up the floor for everyone to make an elevator pitch for what kind of patron you would like to have. Note, the patron you choose will likely greatly affect how the campaign plays out, so, I really want this to be a group effort. To get things started, I'll talk about each of the sample patrons listed at the end of that preview and how I think they would affect the campaign. Note, this is just my throwing poop at the wall and seeing what sticks, so, don't think that you aren't more than welcome to forward your own ideas.
Patron Types:
1. Academy - Basically a network of some sort of learned individuals. Could be a training school or could be some sort of other organization devoted to gathering knowledge. This would probably be the easiest form of patron - you are representatives of some sort of school/guild at Candlekeep to do research for the organization. My first thought is some sort of graduate student grunt worker doing research for the professors.
2. Ancient Being - NO CHAOX. I'm vetoing that one right now Awayfarer. This one has some very interesting implications. You could be working for pretty much anything that's long lived and powerful - dragon, lich, beholder, celestial, demon, take your pick. You could be aboveboard, serving something that everyone knows, or you could be clandestine, ferreting out information for your boss.
3. Aristocrat - I'm frankly at a bit of a loss on this one. Not seeing how it fits in. Basically, you are representing one of the ruling families but, I'm not entirely sure what would motivate them to place a group at Candlekeep.
4. Criminal syndicate. I'll admit straight up that this one intrigues me. You could be serving any one of a number of criminal groups in the Sword Coast, looking to blackmail your way into control over Candlekeep, using the knowledge that you find to grift and whatnot. There are lots of possibliitilies here.
5. Guild - Like Aristocrat, I'm not entirely sure what to do with this patron. Open to ideas.
6. Military force- Again, not sure what to do with this.
7. Religious Order - This has some legs, I think. Although, again NO CHAOX! But, I could see you serving all sorts of different gods/orders - something like Gond the builder looking for new stuff to invent, to Vecna, trying to steal secrets without getting caught. The
8. Sovereign - Like aristocrat, I'm not really sure what a sovereign needs from Candlekeep.
Anyway, those are the 8 patron types listed. Take a bit of time, and let's see some elevator pitches. Say, just two or three sentences long. Don't get buried in details with your pitch.
