Just piddled about in Roll20 trying to bash together a quick encounter, just to test the water.
Holy crap that is one user UNFRIENDLY setup. The NPC macro rollers are utter crap and the wiki reads like stereo instructions. Jeez. That's garbage. I should not need to know how to write scripts to use a bloody virtual tabletop. Grr. Just frustrated. Spent about an hour futzing about and just ran into roadblock after roadblock.
Very much not impressed.

But you have to do that in maptools.... If you need pointers, I can help.

In the Maptools framework for 4e, all you had to do was fill in the numbers. All the die rollers worked right out of the box. Easy peasy.
These die rollers only roll to the GM, adding a step meaning I have to tell you if I hit or not, and then tell you the damage. Plus the die rollers a bloody ugly.
The fact that you can't roll two rolls at the same time is a major PITA. Why didn't they go with the [1d10] square bracket format like every single other VTT out there?

I never use the NPC character sheet.
Here's what I do for my NPCs/monsters:
On every new character you create in the journal, you have 3 tabs; General, Character Sheet and Attributes. On the general tab, I copy in their Monster Manual entry (or at least the relevant portions of it). On the Attributes tab, I create 4 attributes; Hitpoints, AC, Initiative, and Hit. With those filled in, I can now create my macro.
@{selected|token_name} attacks @{target|token_name}
[[1d20 + @{selected|Hit}]] | [[1d20 + @{selected|Hit}]] vs. @{target|AC} AC
The selected and target keywords mean that when you select your token, you can then click the macro. It will change your mouse to a targeting reticule, and then when you select your target, it will complete the macro. The macro above will reveal the AC of your target for quick reference. If you want to keep that secret, then just remove it from your macro. Also, if you want to keep the ACs of your NPC/Monsters secret, make sure your players don't have that in their macros.
To create inline rolls, don't use the single brackets...always use double brackets. So, your 1d10 should look like this [[d10]]. To create an advantage/disadvantage mechanic, you can do this; [[d20]] | [[d20]]. Or, you can do the following; [[2d20KH1]] will give you the highest of 2 d20 rolls, whereas [[2d20KL1]] will give you the lowest of 2 d20 rolls.
If you need more pointers, I am more than happy to help.

Yes, we will be starting an hour later tonight. 7pm CST.
Haven't had a lot of time to prep this past week...Nate has been suffering from insomnia all week, and I only got a decent amount of sleep last night...so I will try to finish prepping when I get home from work. Might be a short session...

Hrm, not sure what I'm doing wrong.
I keep getting the following error when I use your macros:
No character was found for 'selected' No character was found for 'selected' No attribute was found for targeted token by the name of AC
I created two tokens gave them the attributes you talked about, but, for some reason it won't pick them up.

Did you select the tokens when you ran the macro?

Yes. You have to, since it won't work if you don't.

Are you busy this evening? About the same time we normally play on Mondays...I may be able to help you out and see why you're getting the errors.

Let me figure this out

You may need to relink your token to the character/monster sheet you created. I was getting the same issue and had to relink.

Since we were talking about taxes in the US/Canada/Japan, here's a graphic I ran across today: infogr.am/tax_rates_of_oecd_countriesLooks like the US is better than Japan, but far the taxes are more difficult to understand. And of course those evil non-bombing Canadians are even better off than the US tax wise. Bomb-wise, they are still third world..HA!

Yeah, I'd love to see how they measured that. I somehow really, really doubt the average US household comes anywhere near close to paying what a Canadian one would in taxes. I mean, good grief, I paid 54% income tax, 15% sales tax and that was just the start. I'm thinking that that infographic was a bit off.

Hey, going to be a bit interrupted on Tuesday/Monday. Trying to get my verdampt router to open a bloody port. I cannot actually host yet and since my router is all in japanese, I need the tech guys to walk me through this. Sigh. And Tuesday's my only free time. Sorry about that.

I think just one of us will have to host (like with MapTool) so if SOMEONE has their router set up right, it should go OK. I'm spending this weekend doinking around with FG (no dymanic lighting?! What is this, like, Africa, or Detroit?!), so I should be set up OK if no one else is.

Kept forgetting, Merk and I are going to be in Connecticut for a long weekend for Mother'a day. Won't be back til' Tuesday so have fun without me. Tror is willing to kill anything that threatens the party on the assumption that everything is an illusion.

I already have your characters set up...you may have to make some minor tweaks. I've been spending the past few weeks learning the ins and outs...very impressive toolset. I'll host, so when we connect tomorrow, I will provide the IP address. You won't need to worry about licenses or anything...that's provided by me. So's all of the game packages.
The mapping sucks, though...oh, does the mapping suck!

Okey dokey. I'll be a bit late, as I said earlier. Have to deal with custserv but that shouldn't take too long. Hopefully no more than 20 minutes late, if that.

Yeah, the easiest way I've found to do it is to get map images or whip up random maps at donjon.bin.sh - the drawing toolset is very weak, so if you don't have an image ready to go, hahaha, you're boned (as are you if your grid isn't regular).
I'm a fan of the links, though. One of my favorite bits of MapTool that I still kind of miss is the little clickable objects you could put in your map that would spit out a bit of hand-out text when you clicked them - the pins you can put in maps get close to that. And making clickable action icons and drag-and-drop targeting is pretty slick.

I'm probably going to in the future purchase Dundjinni so that I can use maps. Never used DonJon's map interface...may have to give it a look-see.
Where FantasyGrounds shines is campaign and combat management. While it's not perfect (they still don't have a concentration effect, nor can I find a way to change crit range on a single weapon), it is really nice, and extremely efficient.

donjon is just where I go to for randomized map goodness - lots of fun little sub-generators for intersting ideas. Dundjinni would be great for making maps from scratch; I've been doinking around in GIMP the hard way.
